Am I missing something here, or are the paint sets a bit of a ripoff?


At John's price for a 6 colour set of £15.29, that equates to an individual price of £2.54 per bottle.


But if bought separately at £2.10 each, the same 6 bottles comes to £12.60!!


A triumph of laziness over financial prudence? or is my maths totally wrong....

Sets tend to come at a bit higher price,packaging etc. However, I personally still like to get them as a starter and replenish with individual bottles. I store them in their packs, I don't have space for paint racks and I prefer to keep related paints together. So, I am building a nice collection that is ordered into groups of paints for subjects I do on a regular basis. They are still just colours though so I am happy to dip into say the modern Russian set to do a uniform if the colours suit.


They just fit the way I work but there is no reason why you cannot just buy them individually if you prefer. Horses for courses. It is only a rip off if you have no choice.

Models and related items. I always try to buy something if it's in a sale as I like to feel I've had a deal/bargain.


Car boot sales and a lot of internet surfing give great results. I find that if you wait long enough you'll actually get what you want for the price you are willing to pay. At the moment I'm looking for a Cougar from Meng for less than £30 I've been casually looking for about two months but one will come along eventually. Never buy the first thing you see I always do price comparisons and go for the cheapest option.

Fair enough on the storage & convenience side. I still think paying an extra 44p per bottle is a tad too much.

I can vouch for the Vallejo Russian WWII green set. I also keep these sets in their boxes, easier to get at and all together.

Which sets are you looking at? I had priced them the same as buying individual bottles, it doesn't cost me any more to buy a set with 3 bottles than buying 3 individual bottles, I will go through them tonight and make sure the prices are the same.


Some sets especially Vallejo have how to's and tutorials so that's why they cost a little more.

The 3 bottle sets are fine John - I've bought one today!


I was referring to the 6 bottle set, in particular the German late war colours. Again, your prices were just a handy example - another online retailer has that set for £17.50!

I've changed the prices, most were ok but as you pointed out the 6 bottle sets are a bit high, they are now £12.59, but using the same formula I've increased the price on a couple of the bigger sets.

A while ago u bought Vallejo model air ISAF colours and I have found that a couple of the individual colours can't be bought seperately. I can only imagine something like this is why the sets cost more.

I've had an email from Ammo saying that they have had complaints that my prices are too low, I have a pretty good idea which retailer has complained, I have emailed them back with how I work out the prices but if they ask me to put them up I will have to or lose them as a supplier, so make the most of the current prices.
