AK did two types.  Wear and heavy chipping, one is designed to come away in chunks, the other to be a bit more subtle.  I believe that the only difference is the viscosity.  I assume that a thicker layer will create bigger, more defined chips the thinner, a more gentle softer effect.  This, they claim, gives more control and better consistency than hairspray.  There is some truth in this as hairspray from different companies are a slightly different product.  I think most agree, or they used to, that the cheaper versions are best.  This is probably because they are closer to each other other than the more expensive with secret and exotic top end versions.

Because of these variations in the makeup of hairspray, it makes comparisons tricky.  To be honest, I think a cheap can of hairspray and some plastic card or milk bottle sprayed up and loads of practice is the way forward.  Use consistent materials and spend time learning what happens when you use them can be a better investment.  I personally like ASDA smart price hairspray straight from the can.  Some dispense it first and airbrush it but I cannot see the real value of this unless you only want to cover a small area.
