    RLM Colours

Can you please advice me. I normally build military vehicles but am about to start both my ME109 and JU87.

The paint reference guide refers to RLM colours which I am not familiar with. I usually use Tamiya acrylic and was wondering what the equivalent colours are or do any of the other paint manufactures refer to the RLM colours Vallejo AK etc.

    The colours that I am looking for are as follows :- RLM 70 71 65 04 02.

    Cheers guys

If you're happy using Tamiya acrylics Alan, you'll probably be best off with something similar. Mr Hobby Aqueous have the colours that you're looking for in their semi-gloss range. John stocks them in the Scale Model Shop.

The other major manufacturers also do RLM colours, but their formulation is somewhat different from Tamiya & Mr Hobby.  Also the colour matches of Mr Hobby Aqueous is considered very accurate.

Don't want to butt in here but I'm building a few ( Luftwaffe kits at the moment) all in 1/48 and the colour ref RLM is doing my nut in

I got  a few Vallejo/ model air from John SMS  recently and  they seem good but there are so many variations out there of the same colour

ive referenced lots of colours used officially by Luftwaffe and it seems the Rlm changed quire a few colours during WW2  and from unit to unit so I'm trying to use that ref guide and see what paints I have, I work with Tamiya / Revell / Vallejo / model air all in acrylics

Im currently working on 1/48 Me109F2 ( Malta build ) 1/48! Me 109F4 ( Winter camo ( these two nearly ready for display

I have a couple of Me110G2 coming soon don't know camo that I'm going to use  on them or units (ones monogram/ Revell and other is Eduard profilpack

my other is  1/48 Bf 108 Eduard Taifun  Tri Camo  so that's going to be a  interesting

      regards

      Robert

The IPMS Stockholm site is a good general guide to different manufacturers' paint references. If you scroll down the page you'll find paint references and/or mixes for most of the RLM colors you need.

The only RLM colour that might have changed significantly during the war was RLM 76, and even in this case it is possible that the late war 'greenish' variation (not unlike the British colour Sky) was in fact a new colour for which no documentary evidence has been found.

There were variations in some late war colours, RLM 81 was produced in two noticeably different versions, and minor variations in some other colours, but generally they remained remarkably stable, despite changes in their formulation brought on by production expedients and problems with the supply of raw materials.

The real fun, or problem, depending on your point of view, was that  the approved camouflage schemes were often adjusted in an unregulated fashion, right own to unit level.

          Cheers
