I will be painting a F-16 exhaust nozzle using Alclad lacquer. My question is should I apply gloss clear over the top? or Dullcote? or just leave as is with no clear? which will look most realistic? Thanks

I am by no means an expert on Alclad. But in my limited experience it should not have lacquer applied over it if you want to achieve the best metalic finish. You only really need to use clear coats if you want to apply decals on the metal colour. Alclads clear varnish/lacquers are ideal for the job. -

Do not know a thing about Alclad. But exhausts are normally matt as they subjected to high heat.
If you can find a picture close up of the area this would be helpful.
Now after spouting the above what are the exausts made of ? If stainless steel it may be possible that they have more than matt finish.

Looking at that photo seems to me Stephan that it is a matt with just a very hint of satin. Looks a quite new aircraft but what happens when it gets a bit of service ?

The jet pipe would be matt. The temperatures in which they opperate would burn off any form of dirt and grime and as for exhaust soot.... if any it would be pale gray or white.Comment

Alclad sell many different metal colours. If you select the correct one it won't need any clear coat Matt, satin or gloss. They are designed to give the correct finish for the metal they are simulating. I did an Airfix 1/48 Lightning and found it gave a superb metal finish. What I did find is the primed surface you spray it on has to be perfect and flawless. Otherwise any imperfections will be shown up when you put the metal colour on.And be VERY careful if you need to mask over it.Comment
