Hi John.
Black paint would work.
Seriously,you could use a couple of coats of Tamiya smoke(from the inside would be best)
and finally add a mist coat of a very dark brown.try it on a piece of clear plastic;
Hope this helps. -
Thanks Ralph, I didn't think of Tamiya smoke, you've also made me think about Ammo, they do a crystal range which I've just been using for the lights, I'm sure they have a dark one, I thought maybe there would be a different way of doing it.Comment

For the size of the piece I think I will try the Ammo crystal smoke, and I don't stock PS sprays, only TS & AS.
I've just had a bit of an accident, I was using the Ammo crystal orange, I shook it up but it didn't come out too well, I squeezed the bottle a bit harder and the top came flying off, paint everywhere, it looks like it was the ball bearing that was blocking it.Comment

Have you got an airbrush John? Perhaps a thinned down black paint may help in layers. Saves you spending money and time?Comment

They certainly look promising! Incidentally I've just picked up some Tamiya clear colours today for lights and such.
I did wonder if you could mix up a tinted varnish?
I have some Humbrol Matt Cote, and I wonder if a few drops of that, with a tiny bit of pigment from either normal colours, powders or whatever with a small drop of water could give the same translucent effect? I may have to try this.Comment

I use the Tamiya smoke spray quite a bit. It goes on nice and evenly and with enough coats will do exactly what you want.Comment

I used the Ammo smoke, it worked well, I wanted the side and back windows quite dark, and the front with just a tint, I probably went a bit darker on the front than I wanted.
