    Mixing paint.

I learnt today that Revell paint, supplied with model, does not mix with Tamiya paint. Revell 05 Matt white and Tamiya X2 white 50/50 goes like paste in no time at all. The inside of my turret looks like it’s been artexed.

    Hi Gary
You've learned the hard way that Tamiya is not a true acrylic. Tamiya and water based acrylics don't like each other. I've been there, done that and got the tee-shirt :rolling:
I hope your model is not ruined.

Don't feel to bad...we've all been there! When I got back in to this I assumed Tamiya was the brand to have and assumed it was acrylic and learned it is only compatible with it's own thinners!

Not entirely correct, it mixes with Mr Leveling Thinner very nicely. In fact I prefer MLT to Tamiya's own X20A, and also use it to thin lacquers.

Sorry Bob, you're probably right but I don't use them so should have made that clear and deferred!

What I meant to say is that the chap in the shop advised it to be compatible only with X20.

Mr Color and Tamiya paint are intermixable as well. Tamiya is acrylic paint, it has an acrylic binder. The solvent, however is formulated with alcohol as a volatile component rather than having just water as a solvent like Vallejo etc.

No doubt he had a large stock of X20A to get rid of. :tears-of-joy:

You can thin Tamiya acrylic paint just fine with water, and also with isopropanol (easy to buy in the guise of windscreen wiper fluid) which is a prime ingredient of Tamiya X20A thinner. The same goes for Revell acrylics (“Aqua Color”), and you can reconstitute Revell acrylics by slowly mixing in isopropanol when they’ve turned into a thick goo in the pot.

                    Ooh, I didn't know that.

I suppose it should have dawned on me since they can both be thinned by the same stuff.

Not that I have any Tamiya paint... :smiling5:

Reminds me of my early painting days which is why I stick to one manufacturer of paint (Vallejo air and model colour)

I avoided mixing brand names very quickly even though some mix happily!

As for your artex issue, I'd leave it and simply describe it as:
'new German crew misunderstood where to put the Zimmerit on the tank'
