I've used water with Tamiya paints - it works, but not as well as the right stuff. Drying is a bit slower with water.

          Hi Benjamin
Welcome to the forum. Tamiya paint will work much better with Tamiya thinner X-20A or Tamiya Lacquer thinner. The lacquer thinner works very well but is rather smelly.

Water will work fine for Tamiya acrylics. Instead of X-20A thinner, you can also use windscreen wiper fluid — a good guide is that if it smells like the thinner, you can use it for the paint

I have been using IPA to thin Tamiya acrylic paint for a long time and have no problems with it. Another benefit is it is way cheaper than x20.

                      Judge for yourself

I use it (not this brand, but that doesn’t matter) for Tamiya and Mr. Aqueous paints, and it works fine for either.

Tamiya X20A and Mr Hobby Leveller are great; I only thin Mr Hobby Aqua and Tamiya with water if I use hairspray chipping.
