    Bob,

As with Waspie, I used a brush first time with Maskol. Never again.
Now, it is just the ubiquitous cocktail stick. Just keep wiping it on a bit of kitchen roll to get any setting stuff off it.

This works perfectly well with Mr Hobby Mr Masking Sol Neo, Maskol and Microscale Micro Mask.

The Mr Hobby and Maskol are pretty interchangeable. My own preference, though, is Maskol as the jar neck is wide. The Mr Hobby has a conical shape making things progressively more awkward as you progress down the bottle.

The Micro Mask pretty well comes into its own when trying to mask accurately. For example, painting a nameplate all one colour then using MM to 'flood' the background then painting the raised bits. It's my favourite for this type of work. A minor word of warning with it, though - on some occasions I have known the edges to curl a bit when spraying Alclad primers. Just keep an eye on it.

    Hope this helps.

    John

      Afternoon

Just experimented with using masking fluid to separate the lineoum deck and the grey metal areas on the edge of the deck. Looks very good however a big problem has raised its ugly head!

Tried pointy tweezers and a toothpick to peel it off, but both are leaving marks on the linoleum paint below. Defeating the object

Is there a safer way to take the fluid off???

I basically use a cocktail stick. I pick at it lightly until I can get enough to place between the point of the tweezers then gently manoeuvre the mask around until it comes off cleanly.

Unlike you I use it on clear plastic so don't have issues with underlying paint.

When applying the liquid mask you could try putting a large 'blob' near the edge of where you're applying it and use that to lift the dried mask off with touching the paint beneath!!

Hi Chris, does it not scratch the surface below? It's worked very well but there's marks on the painted surface below

Thanks Chaps, just added more in blobs on top of thr first layer to see, plus as practice added a larger amount in one place. Might try wrapping the tips on the tweezers with masking tape??

I remove the bulk of the Maskol with a cocktail stick, the remaining Maskol is plucked off using old masking tape. You can sometimes get the whole thing off with tape, reducing the risk of scratches.

Really struggling, tried rubbing with finger, tweezers with tape on the end, wooden cuticle thingies, no good. Small success with putting masking tape on top and ripping off, some luck. I am wondering if i left it on for too long?

I left it in place while the paint fully cured. Will have to do another test but remove it after 20 mins or so. Otherwise a failed experiment!

Try giving a second coat of mask when the first is cured, more likely to come off in one lump if it's a bit thicker.

                      Right progress!

                      Carried out a comparison experiment!

Used a section on a sheet of plastic. Used both Mr Hobby and Abteilung 502 liquid mask.

Painted two rectangrectangular shapes per product. One with a thin layer and the other much thicker layer. Left to dry, of course the thicker shape took longer. So a cuppa coffee and scone or is it scone??

The Mr Hobby stuck like brown stuff to a blanket, would only come off with tweezers, so marked the plastic below! Next Abteilung, came off very quickly with my finger or a cotton bud!

So brush painted Tamiya LP in squares and repeated, again Mr Hobby a problem, Abteilung quickly off with a rub of my finger or cotton bud.

Only issue the smell, they say it smells like vanilla, the tester must have had a stinking cold! It has a ammonia smell, not pleasant but it works! So try on the practice hull next!

Glad you’re finding solutions Bob. Ammonia stinks, but nothing like Maskol which has a fishy scent ?

This has been a very interesting thread as i want to try some on a canopy instead of masking tape

                        Bob,

You asked "I am wondering if i left it on for too long?"

I've left Maskol on for months (cos I'm such a quick modeller ?) and it has come off again with no detrimental impact.
As the guys have already said, make sure there's a thicker area to grab.

Make sure, when removing the dried fluid at the end of the process, that you pull it off AWAY from the paint.

When doing canopies, for example, a fresh scalpel blade around the periphery will cut the paint layer bridging the canopy and the masking thus preventing chipping of the paintwork.

                          Hi John

Today on Nachi's deck, the Abteilung mask came off with a cotton bud and very easy too. no damage to the paint below. The problem was all my making. Other issue was my mistake of going over it when it was drying, the brush started to peel the first layer off. One to remember

Did ruin too cheap brushes though!
