    vodafone mclaren f1 paint

    hi there

I'm new to this form and looking for some help !!! I am on with building a revell 2 car Mclaren F1 set. Its not the best kit ive had a go at but it gives you plenty of sticker practice.

what im in need of knowing is! does anybody know the right paint code for the colour of the Mclarens body ?? as I'm struggling to get the colour right.

ive just used Humbrol 11 but it looks more white than silver chrome

any help would be good ??

    thanks guys

    Hej Hibbs.

The colour you gave is silver which normally looks ok Chrome silver is Humbrol 191

Are you brush painting or spraying?

Hi Hibbs14, welcome to the friendly forum.

I've had a look on here - Ultimate Model Paint Conversion Chart - Paint4models.com and Humbrol 11enamel and acrylic seem to be the correct match for the Revell 90 called for. However there are other alternatives listed which may give you the colour and finish you are looking for.

Hope this is of some help, and good luck with your build.

Hope to see some pictures of your Mclaren soon.

      Have fun.

      Tony.

        hi Tony

ive used the humbrol 11 and it model seems to of come out more silver white than chrome , im air brushing it on the model and thined it down with normal white spirit like i do when im weathering model trains.

could this be where im going wrong ??

ill try and post a picture in a few days

Ian i might try the code 191 and see how that comes out ! could it be that the paint i have is many years old ??

i feel i need to get this right because if not the whole build will just look wrong lol .

I don't think so. I've been thinning enamels, including Humbrol, with White Spirits for longer than I care to remember and don't think that's your issue. I also have some tinlets of old Humbrol which are at least twenty years old and they work perfectly well. They have been properly stored.

It may well be the paint. I've noticed a distinct fall in the quality of the Humbrol brand in recent years. There were well documented changes in ownership and movement of production to China.

I used to use a lot of the aluminium colour (56 or 57..can't remember) but that has become almost grey. The 11 has also lost it's "silver". I don't use it any more.

I'm afraid I don't know what colour you are looking for on your F1 car,I can only hope that some of the advice from others will help you out. For aluminium finishes I use Alclad lacquers these days.

          Cheers

          Steve

            Hi Hibbs,

Had a go myself at this kit earlier this year.

I'm airbrushing Tamiya acrylics and for the bodyshell I used X11-Chrome Silver.

i think its a bit of a bad kit but really needed the sticker practice so thought it would be good !! just the more model,s i seem to build the more detail i like to try

hope everybody gets the same buzz ??!!? hahaha

Hi Hibbs, I've got a few pictures here, hope the upload OK.

The kits not finished but the bodyshell was sprayed with 90% of the decals on before I had a disaster with the Tamiya Extra Thin glue!! I could of cried

I'll get back to it eventually.

By the way I like the look of the Revell 90 colour.

                        Thanks Hibb,

Those carbon decals can be slippery little suckers

One thing I did do to give myself a chance with the carbon decals on the struts was to give the struts a coat of metallic black first to blend in any imperfections.

I also found the Microset and Microsol invaluable when wrapping the curves and details, especially around the nose with that one piece decal needing bending and stretching in about 8 different ways

I never got around to attempting the side pod decals, and wasn't looking forward to it either. Maybe some very warm water to soak the decals could assist on laying them down correctly.

Just don't rush mate, it took me about 2 weeks of decal work to get where I was before disaster struck.

Keep us updated with your progress Hibbs.

Have to say it look awesome. A lot better than my attempt. I hand brushed it and the paint quality was rubbish. Agree with the fact you get a lot of decal practice. Took me ages. Well done mate.

I'm working on the first of these cars from the same kit, carbon decals a mare but at least get a 2nd go with the other car

I used the Revell 90 paint for the body with a little bit of thinners not as good as the ones posted but good learning.

I will maybe post some pics - really not very good though.
