Tonight I expect to be applying mottle to the sides of my Balkans 109.

The scheme is RLM 02/71/65

Looking at the colour picture it looks as if the mottle is in 02 but, in places looks as if 71 has been applied.

Can some one please confirm what the normal practise was in applying mottle, if there was such a thing! Should I just use 02 or apply some 71 as well?

Incidentally - I am planning to apply it freehand with a H&S with 0.2 needle using Model Air. Any tips? I have not done such a large area of mottle before.....

Hi Barry, there really were no rules for this sort of camouflage applied by the units. It is entirely possible that both the camouflage colours (02 and 71) were applied as they would normally have these available.

If you are doing "Black 10" I posted a colour photo of that aircraft in another thread (which, like the photo, I can't find) and the mottle/striping definitely comprises both colours. It is a reasonable assumption that others from the same unit would be similar.

One other quick point.

I have some doubts about the painting of the wheel wells.

I have seen them in 02 and 65 before but the instructions in this kit says aluminium with black 'walls'. Are the kit instructions right? If not, 02 or 65?

Barry, I think Steve is referring to my Bf109 Sardinia recce. aircraft build. He kindly posted some very nice pictures and useful info. too!

Take a look if you want...I can't offer any help re. painting the mottle as I don't possess an A.B., and my model is brush painted!

If you want to have a stab at something that will really try your patience, take a look at my 1/72 Balkan Theatre 1941 Bf109's cammo. It was again Steve who put me up to it!!!!

I would do the wheel wells in 02 without some very good evidence to the contrary. The "walls" actually had a laced canvas liner from production but these often seem to have been lost once in service.

This is a G, in the E the liner went all the way around.



It's counter intuitive, but for that kind of mottle I actually raise my air pressure to about 30-35 psi, get nice and close and start spraying. You just need to be very careful with the amount of paint you allow to flow.

Here's a wheel well on my 1/32 Cyberhobby Bf 109 E. The liners were included in the kit........so I stuck them in.

The mottle turned out well with RLM02. I will be posting pics of the aircraft soon. Varnishing/decalling and weathering stages to get through now........
