Hello

Does anyone please have really good pictures or drawings of a camouflage scheme for a sea hurricane please? I've got the new tooled airfix 1/78. There are two paint options provided - I like the look of the No 43 Squadron, RAF Tangmere Wing 1942, although the camouflage and scale frighten the life out of me, given I'm fairly new to doing these camouflages.

The 43 Squadron option is for a Hurricane (it's an RAF squadron). In 1942 the camouflage would have been the day Fighter Scheme (DFS). Dark Green and Ocean Grey over Medium Sea Grey.

The camouflage pattern didn't change from the earlier BOB version, just the colours and the addition of the yellow stripes on the leading edge of the wings and the Sky band around the fuselage in front of the fin.

I'll see if I can find a diagram somewhere.

Most of those new Airfix kits have quite comprehensive camouflage and colour diagrams included.

Steve's summary of the RAF colours is all you need to know, that from 1941 the Ocean Grey replaced Dark Earth Brown and Medium Sea Grey replaced the old underside colour of Sky, with the addition of a Sky coloured fuselage band on the rear fuselage forward of the tail with yellow leading edge recognition stripes (FS34079/36152 over 36270). You can use the pattern for any later-1940 Hurricane and simply change the colours around the Dark Green. Earlier Hurricanes had a reversed pattern so be careful that you use references to ensure the correct one is chosen. I'm pretty sure Airfix will have given you the scheme you need.

Royal Navy Sea Hurricanes up to 1943 typically wore Extra Dark Sea Grey/Dark Slate Grey over Sky undersides (FS36118/34096 over 34583) and from 1943 the undersides changed to a 'Grimmy White' (ivory) colour.

Here's an example of a Hurrican II in DFS from the "Combat Colours" series.





The brown and green Hurricane in the link posted by Laurie is in the Temperate Land Scheme (TLS) which preceded the Day Fighter Scheme and is the familiar Dark Earth/Dark Green over Sky.

What do you mean too small to use?.If the pictures in the instructions are too small cant you just enlarge them on a photocopier?.

Aidan, the pattern remained the same whether Temperate Land Scheme, Day Fighter Scheme or any of the others. It was only the colours (and upper/lower demarcation on some FAA schemes) that changed.

Early on, applying mainly to the TLS, there was an A and B scheme which were mirror images of each other. The camouflage patterns were laid out in drawings before the war.

Just to be sure, did the DFS change in 1942 for Spitfires as well?
