Steve it would have changed in 1941 for front line Spitfires as well as Hurricanes.

It changed for all aircraft in Fighter Command starting on 15th August 1941. The first to change were 10 Group, 11 Group and the Spitfire Wing of 12 Group. Being at the sharp end, these units were given priority. After the Sky debacle in 1940 no new colours were needed. The undersides became Medium Sea Grey and the Dark Earth on the upper surfaces was replaced with a mixed grey, 7:1 Medium Sea Grey and Night, all paints that should be available from existing stocks. The mixed grey was formalised as a new colour, Ocean Grey, some time later.

Here's a copy of an order explaining the new scheme dated 31st August and sent to Maintenance Command.

OOOoops. I can't edit my post above but when I wrote "all aircraft in Fighter Command" I should have specified that it was all those operating during the day. Night fighters would not have been included.

        Cheers
