    Vallejo Model Colour!!!!

While browsing another site I came across this thread!

    I can't vouch for it's accuracy though.

'Before you thin your Vallejo Model Color for airbrushing, specifically the Model Color line and not any of the other lines, read the label. Some of them contain cadmium, a very toxic heavy metal, which you do not want to inhale nor ingest. There is no known harm from skin contact, but make sure to clean up well so you don't have any to accidently rub or lick off when you eat. And never lick your brushes. Cadmium is used in other things as well such as batteries and it is found in cigarette smoke. It is a natural metal found in the soil so there are also low levels in some foods'.

This was mentioned in another thread by matt I believe,he also mentioned they may contain barium...although to be honest the amount is so low that you could probably drink a lot of paint a week for the rest of your life with no ill effects ...the spraying scenario is self explanetary as with any other air born stuff in the fact you don't want it lining your lungs ... They do, however, have to report the contents of any substance that "could" be hazardous to health in line with H&S guidelines.

Having spent the last 50 yrs spraying all sorts of carcinogenic containing substances, I consider I have already done whatever damage I could do to myself so these little bottles are not going to make much difference now.

I just thought I would post for those who are new to the hobby to be aware

Oh I'm not belittling your info Gregg, just thought I'd add a bit in agreement with being careful spraying.

I've probably got a good lining of permabel (I'll bet you called it perma-blob as we did) in my lungs too

          No insult taken at all.

Permabel 20-line, lethal substances in the production (carcinogenic). A m8 of mine was involved in the pre-production testing of 20-line, we now nick-name him 'he's dead but no ones told him' he is just a walking white skinned skeleton!

            Poor bloke!

Apart from the smell (that I thought was really bad, others said it was OK) the thing I remember about perma--blob was never, ever get a run or drip in it as it was a nightmare to rectify

We always found that the very very high gloss finish looked artificial/wrong + it stuck to anything it came into contact with like the proverbial STAB..

I don't think the original poster of the warning quoted has any understanding of the toxicity of cadmium......why should he?

Reading many material data sheets or EU regulations with a limited understanding of the terms is enough to scare the pants of anybody!

I'll just say this (as an ex-chemist). If you are a smoker you really don't need to worry about the cadmium you will be exposed to in Vallejo paints, you're getting your dose from the cancer sticks. Having said that I would strongly recommend the wearing of an appropriate mask when spraying anything other than water

                Cheers

Looked this matter up at the time Matt brought it up. I was surprised as I had read that Vallejo paints were not toxic. True they are but about 3% are not. Read the results of the USA reports on the paints which they had tested in fact all of them. The reports, asked for by Vallejo, are on their site for all to see.

All Vallejo Air is non toxic. A small number, the yellows, in the Model range have a small amount of cadmium. Vallejo actually have a couple of paragrahs about this also on their site. From what I have read the amount in them & is minimum & after washing out a brush is virtually nil. I certainly will go on caressing my brushes with my lips, the lips love it (not the cadmium).

Barium not a mention in the USA findings. What does worry me though is that I have had two barium meals in my lifetime. The good news they do not seem to have done me harm at least not evident at the moment. They were in each case two shots of the stuff about the size of a sherry glass. Also add that they stuck around in my body some days until they decided to escape !.

Will just go & have a beer (avec cadmium : non). Probably more harm there than any cadmium I have ingested.

You're right, it was like plasti coat and looked weird .... I know they made it to spray to an instant shine with no finishing but it really needed to look like a sprayjob and not smoothrite enamel

We just used it up on the banger cars as, like you said, it stuck like pooh to anything

A barium meal is actually mainly barium sulphate, the least toxic of barium salts, essentially because it is virtually insoluble. The sulphate is also the compound used in some white paints.

The problem here is that someone reads barium, a highly reactive metallic element which I don't think even occurs naturally, with no comprehension of the properties of it's various compounds.

                        Cheers

You guys are right about these hazard warning sheets:
