I've not used either brand Alan, but I did experiment with Tamiya acrylic & Vallejo Model Colour - the result was a gel-like sludge! I'd guess it was because Tamiya paint is alcohol based & I'd bet the Humbrol

    stuff is too.

You can try it & see what happens!

    Cheers

Does the revell paint say if it's alcohol based or what?

It doesn't give any ingredients john so I have no idea it does say it can be thined with water and the humbrol just says water based but says it contains preservatives and no mention of alcohol

Sounds interesting Alan, is this for the Klingon battle cruiser or the tank dio?

Tank dio mate I was running low on dark earth so decided to mix in those little pots you get with starter kits due to me not being able to do a supply run until the weekend

Problem I see is that they both probably use their thinners or dryers in their paint. Vallejo do the same they have their own concoction. May one or all have a retardent and also sounds contridictory a fast dryer. Mix any of them, despite the fact you can use water, and you run the risk of them not working together as you would expect or hope. One problem in mixing paints which are not as compatible as supposed is drying problems where you get speparation and minute cracks. Also the possibility of very slow drying times.

My golden rule is keep to the same manufacturer. Enough problems there with out extending the difficulties.

This is what the two manufacturers say.

The Revell Color Mix Thinner Acrylic 100ml is used to thin Acrylic paint. Thinned acrylics are suitable for airbrush use and, when thinned heavily, act like watercolour paints so can be used as coloured washes.

In principle Revell Aqua Color paints can be diluted with water to facilitate spraying. However dilution with Aqua Color Mix has two advantages. Firstly, it is a retardant which prevents the paint from drying too quickly in the spray gun and on the background. Secondly, the thinner gives an improved result when sprayed on the model. When matt and satin matt paints are used Aqua Color Mix reduces undesirable lines when the paint is applied. Recommended mixing ratio: 3-4 parts paint to 1 part Aqua Color Mix. As this mixing ratio depends heavily on the spray gun used and the working pressure of the compressor, please test the paint with less thinner to start with. If the airbrush "sputters" or the paint dries too quickly on the model (rough surface) simply dilute it a bit more.

                    Manufacturer: Revell

Model: 39621 Color Mix Thinner Acrylic 100ml

                    HUmbrol Acrylics

                    Usage

A water-based, fast dry paint developed for use on plastic model kits but which can also be used on other substrates. Matt, Satin, Gloss, Metallic and Clear finishes are available.

                    Substrate

A wide range of surfaces including most plastics, wood, glass, ceramics, metal, cardboard, sealed plaster, sealed hardboard and many more.

                    Application

Brush straight from the tin or Airbrush with a suitable thinner such as water. Two thin coats are preferable to one thick coat. The usual thinning ratio is 2 parts paint to one part Humbrol Acrylic Thinner.

                    Drying Time

1-2 hours ‘hard dry’, allow longer for Gloss and Metallic finishes.

                    How To Clean

Acrylic Thinners or water when wet, cellulose when dry.
