DIY Paint Booth advice needed

Hi all,

I'm planning to build a cheapo paint booth, i already bought the fan, flexible hose, and the plastic container. It's pretty straight forward I think, but do I need a filter? And what is that for? Isn't it gonna make the fan slower? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Leo the filter would stop/minimise paint colouring the exit area around the extractor pipe.

The filter is to stop particulates, paint etc from actually being drawn into the fan, it traps them. Without it the paint spray particles will eventually coat your fan blades and it will loose performance. Although you're probably going to use water based paints anyway just bear in mind that using solvent based paints is not a good idea due to the solvent causing a fire risk.

Terry's right Leo. Although you're obviously planning to vent the fumes outside, there are still a lot of paint particles flying around.

Without a filter, over time they will end up on the fan blades & in the mechanism - that will definitely reduce its efficiency & shorten its life.

Should be no problem due to the quantity used. I know some folk who have used a booth for spraying primers, car paints and varnishes straight from rattle cans-although it worked okay it is not advisable due to the solvents used collecting in the tube, they are a fire risk.

One bit of advice is once you have finished spraying leave the unit on to continue venting for a few minutes to help clear the fan and hose. One issue, especially using solvent based paints, varnishes etc is that folk turn it off and coil the hose up allowing the solvents to sit in the hose. Despite using a low power AC fan on start a spark can ignite any solvents trapped.

Funnily enough I will be making a extraction system myself, will be using this system as I can just plug it in: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281231016248?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p398 4.m1423.l2649 the hose will have this attachment on the end in the box: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280837101999?var=580075229824&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 it will have a fitted filter in it. The box will also have a larger filter fitted, so hoping that double filter system will trap at least 90% of all particulates.

I think i'll try to install it first then see if it works the way it supposed to be, then i'll add the filter later. I'll keep you guys updated. I'm not gonna make something fancy though, just to make sure the paint fumes is out of the house. Cheers guys for the inputs

Leo a couple of points which may help.

You only need a gentle extract not a hurricane. Otherwise you will stir up the air unnecessarily and drag in bits. Alo it will effect if to strong the flow from the airbrush.

On the Commercial one I have Expo they say remove the filter if exiting straight to the outside. Only use the filter when re-cycling.
