HO Roundhouse Models Old Time Reefer Car Lightly Weathered

I built this Reefer Car yesterday morning. This is a Early HO Roundhouse Models Wood Reefer car with Ice Bunks. The car body was pretty bright and “toyish” looking but I didn’t want to over weather it and loose the over all appearance of the car. I used a soft Makeup Brush that one of my Daughters gave me and a Pastel stick. For the Reefer Door hinges, Hardware and Grab Irons I used a Graphite pencil. The undercarriage was painted a Flat Dark Gray. Here’s the build and finished pics I’ll post some later on the layout. I have another one of these cars I’ll be building soon from the same era and I’ll post more pre-build pics to show the details of this Model. Enjoy the pics.

It's a bit like a foreign language to me who knows absolutely nothing of old American railways :smiling:
What I do know is that the model looks great and these threads about your railway are really interesting.

Nice subtle weathering there Lee. Great paint jobs on these old cars. Gives you lots of visual interest on the layout.

You certainly have the right technique for these Lee. Those boggies have the look of well worn stock .
Nice of your Daughter to help out with the soft brush .

Jim. Thanks for that nice complement. This past winter I’ve been educating my self on European Railways. I bought some old HO OO Airfix kits and maybe some day to make a small Diorama out of them. I’m glad you have took interest in my layout.

Thanks Tim. This car was pre-painted and Decaled at the factory and yes it does.

Thanks John I haven’t done many in my life time but I enjoy it. Sometimes I think I get to heavy weathering on the “Trucks” that’s what we call them here that your referring to bogies I’m sure that’s what there call across the pond. Yes when the Girls are done with there Makeup brush or stuff they always ask if I can use it before throwing it away. Some of that stuff is very good to work on models with. Thanks for stopping by my friend.

Take a close look at the real thing....you generally can't over weather the trucks. IMO they look about right. As Tim said, nice and subtle. Should look the bomb on the layout.

Andy that was a nice complement and I appreciate it. When I was kid I would look at Railroad Magazines at our local Supermarket and was amazed at there work back then in the 1980s. I never thought I would even own one some day or be called good at it. Thanks again Andy.
