Firstly a warm welcome to the forum. You are asking a huge question there that cannot be effectively answered as it is so big.
Modelling materials depend upon what you are making and whether you are building from scratch or modifying a kit.
If you could give us an idea of what you intend making and perhaps what the materials are for then we can probably give you a better idea. Meanwhile have a look through our tutorials and build threads to get some ideas. -

you say you are interested in making it a full time job ?- are you saying you want to be an industrial modelmaker for your job/ career ?
if you do then i may be able to give you some more information, there are several industrial modelmaking university courses here in the Uk and also some other routes into the industry.... the University course is good but it relies on getting the hands on practical experience- many modelmaking companies use students, its a good way to get experience.....
are you based in the UK ?- how old are you ? - what type of models do you most like to make ?-Comment

Welcome to the forum. I hope you enjoy your stay. Making this a carrer could be good but again it depends on what models you are going to produce and what materials you are going to make.Comment

I see a lot of models that are scratch built and often look exceptional - try to get hold of a quantity of "scratch" as it seems to be excellent stuff!
Sorry that was a :lame: joke!
