Finally, an Acrylic gloss that's really gloss, thought I'd never find one

As per the title, I've finally disciovered an Acrylic gloss clearcoat which is genuinely gloss, unlike the Matte of Revells offering and the satin / semi gloss of every other acrylic gloss medium i've tried.

The stuff in question is Fimo gloss varnish, thins with water, sprays and covers well and dries to a nice shiny gloss finish.

I will update this with a pictre of the test item i've sprayed to show the finish, the base was sprayed with Humbrol Enamel and i've found previously that the best acrylic varnish I had tried dulls down the deep gloss considerably, whereas this stuff didn't.

    Fimo Accessories Gloss Varnish

Link above to my wifes shop, (I was fortunate that she got this in and was able to try it otherwise it wouldn't have occurred to me to do so), Of course you should be able to get this at any hobby store that sells Fimo clay and tools but should you want to purchase from there i'm sure my missis wouldn't complain.

Now while on the subject, she sells craft items, primarily beading and jewellery making but there are a few things i've often looked at among her stock and thought, 'y'know, that would be handy for......' etc

Things like knitted wire which could make radiator / oil cooler covers, threads, cords, nylon wire and leather thong in various thicknesses which could be used for all manner of dio stuff, small link chain which again could be handy for dio stuff, ships etc, Bead reamers which make quite nifty scribeing tools etc.

I'll stick some links to the stuff, (I know i'm shamelessly plugging her store but when all's said and done I want her to make enough money to let me stay at home and get more modelling time, so dig deep) :cool2:

Look forward to the results, good on you for supporting your wife. Craft items are always handy, I went to a bankrupt auction some months back, and there where boxes of craft items, bought Gluedots, microdots, pva glue, craft foam pads, the loft is loaded with the stuff, when you model, then your right you have the attitude of "I could use that".

        Hi Mike !

This sounds very promising indeed. I have also been frustrated with the choice of acrylic gloss available. Either they are satin or, like Tamiya and Gunze, they leave a rubbery surface, when laying down a wet coat, that seems to never fully cure and that makes them vulnerable to imprints and dents and are difficult to polish, they are quite glossy though.

If the one you are testing turns out to cure to a hard surface with a high gloss that allows for polishing, then I'm sold!

        /Daniel

Hmmm, not sure where that's gone, I'm sure she still stocks that among her fimo order. Will check with her when she wakes and find out. Boyle lasts a while so I've not needed to replenish mine recently.

Gomer, I can say I've finished a couple of models in it, it dries very hard, very glossy and I love it. The only time I've damaged it is when I tried to compound a run, (my own clumsy fault), with an ammonia based citing compound, it softened the whole area but on the plus side it meant I could peel it off clean the paint and respray. I've not had probs with tamiya not curing but never managed it a glossy as this. I use enamel gloss over enamel but anywhere where there's a mix, enamel/acryl I use this, just thin with tap water too.

Additional note, there are a couple of fimo powders, gold/silver, very very fine like mig pigments, not sure what it could be used for but I'm sure there's a modelling possibility for that? I've seen youtube videos using artists aluminium powder for nmf plane finishes so maybe something like that?
